Groningen, January 15th 2009 – Today, during the Noorderslag festival, the international Interactive award 2009 has been awarded to Silence is Sexy. The award is a joint initiative of Noorderslag Eurosonic and theFactor.e and has been created to support European acts who use the internet in an original way to promote their music. It is the second time that this award has been presented.
According to the jury and the public Silence is Sexy have presented themselves in a unique way by using torrents as a successful marketing tool. The winner has received a price of 5000 euros. They have also won two days of professional recording time in the recording studio Spitsbergen.
Silence is Sexy
Silence is Sexy was founded in 2003. Two years later the band won the ‘Grote Prijs van Nederland’. Their first album was released in 2007. The distribution of their latest album This Ain’t Hollywood was quite special; the album could be downloaded for free on the website of the band and on Mininova, the largest torrent site in the world.
With the Interactive Award Noorderslag Eurosonic and theFactor.e want to emphasize the interactive means that are currently available for musicians to present themselves and their music in a unique way. The music industry more and more moves from the traditional way of promotion, like advertising, billboards and TV, to the infinite possibilities of the internet. The Interactive Award strongly supports and encourages this move.
The independent jury of the Interactive Award 2009 consisted of four professionals from the music and new media industry. Bazz, lead singer of Van Katoen and last year’s winner was one of the jury members, next to foreman of the jury, Thijs Helfrich, Creative Director of theFactor.e, Hans Brouwer of Massive Music and the American music marketing guru Bob Baker. The audience also had the opportunity to vote for one of the nominated acts.
‘This year the various concepts were very inspiring again’, says Thijs Helfrich, foreman of the jury. ‘It is great to see how bands, often with very low budgets, get so creative in reaching and increasing their audience.’ According to Peter Smidt, Creative Director of Noorderslag, the Interactive Award matches perfectly with the mission of Noorderslag. Peter Smidt: ‘It is very important to encourage Dutch and European pop- and rock music and that is just the effect of this international award.’
The other nominees for the Interactive Award 2009 were Bløf, Zuco 103, Aart Lus & Ed Lip and Georgia Wonder. Check the internet on http://www.interactive-award.nl to learn more about the online concepts of all the nominees.
