Their influences are quite something: Frank Zappa, Omar Rodriguez, John Coltrane and the Russian master Dimitri Sjostakovitsj. That has to be complicated music. But instead of drowning in strange experiments this distinct jazz combo sounds strikingly consistent and understandable. This continuation of the terribly undervalued De Vogels show that they are true masters. No freakiness to be freaky, just the urge to make exciting and challenging music. Sun Ra looks down from heaven and sees it is good.
